Identifying first edition books can be tricky, because there is not a standardized system in the publishing industry for specifying first edition books. Especially in the past, each publisher used their own system of applying copyrights dates and reprint information to their books. Further down this page is some general information and some examples and links about identifying first edition books.

Along the left hoover over "Shop By Department" and wait for the drop-down menu, in the drop-down menu hoover over one of the "Kindle" links and in the next pop-up menu that appears to the right, look for "Kindle Books" and click on "Kindle Books". At that page, along the left side under the category "Popular Features" click "Kindle Best Sellers". And there you are! Just select "Top 100 Paid" or "Top 100 Free". There are other ways to get there, such as a search, but this gives a good 3-column view.

Book Identification Info & Sources

Number Line: A sequence of numbers used to identify how many reprints of the book have been issued. Many publishers use numbers 1 - 10 in various combinations where 1 is the first printing. When the 1 is removed and the lowest number is 2, that indicates a second printing, when the 2 is removed that indicates a third printing, and so on. A "Complete Number Line" is when all of the of numbers in the series are present, and generally indicates that a book is a first edition. This is not an absolute, some publishers, start with 2 as an indication of a first printing.

Some books will not have a number line. Some books will say what printing the book was, such as fifth printing. Some publishers will be really confusing by providing the older, original copyright date on a much newer edition. This is why it is so important to research a first edition book before selling or buying a book.

Popular paperback books can have numerous printings and may even be in double digits, they also may indicate the month of the reprinting. Paperback books are often collectible for their cover artwork.

Book Club Editions: Book Club Editions will be missing a retail sales price on the flap of the dust jacket and the dust jacket will often say it is a Book Club Edition.

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry - From my research, the true first American edition was published by Reynal & Hitchcock, Inc. in 1943. Many times a version printed in about the 1960s that is published by Harcourt & Brace Publishing Company is thought to be a first edition, because the copyright date says 1943, but the Harcourt & Brace Publishing Company did not exist in 1943. Here are a few references and there are plenty more.
